Hungry Henry Activities

Activities

In Hungry Henry, Henry meets lots of friendly animals made out of food: a grapefruit octopus, a toast owl, a blueberry sheep, and more! Now you can create some animal friends of your very own using nothing but paper plates, scissors, and glue.

Octopus

Supplies:

• Paper plate

• Yellow paint

• Glue stick

• Scissors

• Black washable marker or crayon

• Red washable marker or crayon

• Yellow, white, and red construction paper

Directions:

1. Paint the paper plate yellow.

2. Trace a 6.5" diameter circle onto the red paper and cut out. There are several ways to do this; you can cut a circle out of a second paper plate and trace it, or you can use a household item such as a cereal bowl turned upside down to trace. Or freehand it, if you're really daring!

3. Fold the red circle in half, then fold in half again and crease. Unfold the circle.

4. Using the creases in the paper as a guide, draw 2 straight lines to form a cross, dividing the circle into fourths. Then draw 2 more lines diagonally so you have a total of 8 sections.

5. Cut 8 small triangular indents around the edge of the circle—one at the end of each line.

6. Now take a piece of white paper and fold it in half. Draw a small circle (about 1.5" in diameter) onto the paper and cut it out. These circles will be the eyes.

7. Color pupils onto each eye using black marker, then glue the eyes onto the red circle. Add a mouth below the eyes.

8. Fold a piece of yellow paper in half and draw four legs at different lengths. Cut them out and you will have 8 legs. With glue stick, apply glue to the tops of the legs, as shown below.

9. Glue the legs to the body. (Note: Some people find it easier to glue the two leg pieces together before attaching to the body.)

Owl

Supplies:

• 2 paper plates

• Brown paint

• Orange paint

• Glue stick

• Scissors

• Black washable marker or crayon

• Brown, green, orange, and yellow construction paper

Directions:

1. Cut an oblong half circle out of the top of the paper plate to create the shape of the owl's head. Then cut 2 oblong half circles out of paper plate #2 for the wings. 

2. Paint the owl's body brown. (Tip: Drop a quarter-size amount of paint in the center of the plate and spread the paint using a cotton ball.) Paint the wings orange. 

3. Using construction paper, cut out an orange triangle for the nose, two white and two yellow circles for the eyes, and a few orange spikes for hair.

4. Create branches, leaves and feet with construction paper. For the branches, cut 2 strips 1" wide by 6" long. For the feet, create 2 circles about 1.5" in diameter and cut out 2 triangular shapes from each circle. Glue everything together with a glue stick.

5. Glue wings, eyes, nose, and hair to the owl's body. Using black marker, color in black pupils on the eyes and add feathers.

6. Finally, glue the branches and feet to the body.

Sheep

Supplies: 

• Paper plate

• Blue paint

• Purple paint

• Wine cork

• Glue stick

• Scissors

• Black washable marker or crayon

• White and purple construction paper

Directions:

1. Cut a wavy pattern along the edge of the plate to make a scalloped edge.

2. Paint the sheep's body dark blue by mixing blue and purple paint. (Tip: Drop a quarter-size amount of paint in the center of the plate and spread the paint using a cotton ball.)

3. To create the sheep's head and legs, fold white construction paper in half and use 3 fingers to help trace a wide oval shape for the head. Draw 4 straight lines about 1" apart and the same length of the paper. Cut out legs and head.

4. Fold purple construction paper in half and use your thumb to trace 3 half circles for feet and ears. Cut out and you will have 6 half circles, 4 for the feet and 2 for the ears.

5. Glue the ears to the head and the feet to the legs. Using black marker or crayon, draw eyes and a mouth on the head.

6. Dip one end of the wine cork in white paint, and apply dots to the sheep's body.

7. Finally, glue the head and the legs to the body. You're finished!
