Mama Monarch
Meet Mama Monarch!
As Mama feasts and in turn pollinates the earth, readers will take in the vibrant cut paper-illustrations of changing scenery, stopping at different locations for a sip of aster or delicious dill.
Learn all about the Monarch Butterfly and how you can help protect them!
Monarchs move! The journey or migration of the monarch butterfly from a special forest in Mexico to the Canada Great Lakes can last up to 3,000 miles—up to 100 miles in a single day!
Monarchs munch! Milkweed (aeslepias) is the host plant for monarch butterflies, the only plant that adults will lay eggs on and that their baby caterpillars can eat. Other flowering plants provide nutritious nectar to fuel their amazing journey.
Monarchs are magical! The life cycle of monarch butterflies has four stages: adult butterflies lay eggs, which hatch into caterpillars, which, after much munching, turn into a chrysalis. After around 10 days, through a process called metamorphosis, a beautiful butterfly emerges, ready to fly.
Monarchs need help! You can help monarch butterflies by planting milkweed and varieties of flowers the bloom spring, summer, and fall (examples: Daisies, Cosmos, Zinnias, Asters); and by not spraying chemicals on your yard or garden.
